NEWS -UPDATES WEEKLY

June 2008

Documentary synopsis:

Three young, naive and foolhardy friends test their relationships, their bank accounts and their personal safety in an effort to traverse the globe and achieve their childhood dream to become global adventurers. From Malcolm Douglas and Alby Mangles to Steve Irwin, the legend of the fearless Australian adventurer runs deep in local mythology; of hairy unkept men melding into harsh environments, surviving on their wits and emerging unscathed from some of the most isolated regions of the far-flung world.

For three Uni mates from rural NSW, Ben, Howie and Danny, the lure of such mythology was too strong to resist. With each sharing a love of the ocean, the group concocted a plan to surf the 7 seas of the world, a trip that would see them visit all continents and 25 countries; negotiating a multitude of languages, cultures and environments.

Yet the trio were to discover that adventuring is not all beautiful vistas, great surf and good times. Complications, arguments and accidents became the rule, rather than the exception. Danny fell asleep at the wheel in the Northern Territory and hit a cow, Shaun nearly drowned in the Southern Ocean, Ben drove over the wrong sand dune in the middle of the Sahara and destroyed their car, they trusted too much in Guatemala and got robbed. More than anything else, they spent nearly every waking hour together a lifestyle that came close to tearing the group apart.

Luckily the boys were not alone on the road. Having visited over 55 schools around Australia and talked with students about their then current adventure, the trio would receive support and encouragement that helped them through the toughest of times. The school visits combined the unlikely partnership of surfing and motivational thinking, allowed the trio to share with other young people their dreams, goals and how they intended to achieve them. In return many students related their own dreams and ambitions. The exchange strengthened the trioís resolve to see their trip through to the end, regardless of the dangers, poor food and suspect personal hygiene, all of which typified a day on the road.

From the beginning of 2003 to the end of 2004 the group visited Australia, New Zealand, North America, Central America, South America, Norway and parts of Europe, Northwest Africa, South Africa and the many islands of Indonesia.

Given the relatively disastrous nature of the journey, the 3 mates parted ways at the end of the trip and never touched the footage they filmed. Itís only now they are able to reflect on what they achieved together and how their relationships will never be the same.
